The new generation Apple TV is finally here not only has Apple made significant changes to the device, but the Apple TV remote has also been fitted with a taptic engine to make it more functional.

New information was leaked ahead of the scheduled reveal of the new Apple TV, the new iPhone and the third generation Apple Watch as scheduled on September 12. The new information revealed that the new Apple TV remote will feature a taptic engine that will facilitate haptic feedback.  The information was courtesy of a developer known as Guilherme Rambo who revealed through social media that he came across evidence suggesting haptic feedback on the remote.

Rambo posted a screenshot containing various words including “vibe waveforms,” “force calibration,” and “actuator calibration.” These references strongly suggest the presence of haptic feedback on the remote. Such changes would be a significant step forward from the current Siri remote which has attracted a lot of criticism because it does not offer a good user experience. New changes will thus be a welcome relief.

“Making an iPhone extremely thin might make for a good design, but the same doesn’t apply for a TV remote. A good TV remote needs a little bit of heft and it needs to be ergonomically friendly,” stated the first respondent to Rambo’s tweet.

The respondent went on to bash the current Apple TV remote for its poor design and lack of backlighting. It features a touch interface but the lack of haptic feedback means the user is not really able to tell if the user has tapped on a button or not. This type of feedback has been available on the iPhone since 2015. The presence of a taptic engine in the new Apple TV remote means users will at least get a more user-friendly experience. Other significant changes that have also been rumored for the new Apple TV include support for 4K and high definition content. However, this is not a confirmation of the features available and actual confirmation will take place in a few hours. The upcoming iPhone which has been rumored to be named “iPhone X” is the main attraction at the event.
