Clashes Of Values Between Trump’s Supporters And Opponents In Portland
Tension was high Portland city’s downtown over the weekend following a series of skirmishes of counter-demonstrations by hundreds of President Trump’s supporters. Protesters and counter-protesters congregated in the heart of Portland’s business and government district with all sorts of crude weapons claiming that they were attending a pro-Trump free-speech rally.
However, what began as a peaceful demonstration turned into a tense exchange of name calling between the rival groups. Before long, the disruption by flare-ups resulted into throwing of objects and at one point balloons of “foul-smelling liquid.” All these were directed at the heavily armed officers from local and federal agencies who had built a wall between the rival groups to separate them.
“Make America great again. Black lives matter”
Both groups help high their placards reading different messages. On one end Trump supporters’ signs outlined “Don’t tread on me,” “God, guns and Trump” and “Make America great again.” The black-clad protesters’ signs stated “Black lives matter,” “You have blood on your hands” and “Portland stands against hate.”
Images of a 35-year-old suspect in the killings, which went viral, triggered more anger among many Portlanders. The suspect was shown participating in a parallel protest in April, which was led by local video blogger Joey Gibson. Apparently, this same blogger had organized Sunday’s demonstration. Efforts by Portland’s Mayor Ted Wheeler to have Gibson’s federal permit revoke had failed.
Several arrests made
Among the many who attended the pro-Trump free-speech rally included members of the “alt-right,” a loose-knit movement founded by white nationalists. Kyle Chapman, a San Francisco Bay Area resident and developer of an online following using the moniker “Based Stickman” was also spotted in the crowd
The protests were so ugly such that officers had to use pepper spray to push back the counterdemonstrators into the park they were gathering. Several arrests were made but the police officers will not reveal which sides those arrested belonged to. Out of the 14 arrests, 11 will be answering to charges of disorderly conduct while others will also be charged with carrying concealed weapons. Nonetheless, there were no cases of major injuries
