China And South Korea Targeting Normalizing Relations After THAAD Conflict
The past one year has been characterized by frosty diplomacy and economic pressure. That won’t be going on anymore and that follows the announcement made on Tuesday where both China and Korea resolved to settle their differences and they are at the moment engaging in normalizing the relationship.
The Foreign Ministry of South Korea outlined that the joint desire to denuclearize the Korean Peninsula was the one that prompted the detente. Both parties have moved ahead to attach great importance to the China-Korea relationship and that is according to a statement released by the ministry.
China’s Foreign Ministry in its own coordinated statement said that the two nations had expressed their willingness to work towards establishing a more cordial relationship.
South Korea and China have had deep ties over the years and have been enjoying a close relationship till it reached that point where their relationship hit the rock. It was specifically damaged last July and that was at the moment Seoul agreed upon installing the U.S.-owned Terminal High Altitude Area Defense (THAAD) missile defense platform on its soil.
Though both Washington and Seoul raised arguments that the THAAD system bore only defensive capabilities, Beijing raised concerns over the sophisticated radar capabilities of the system as well as over the U.S. encirclement.
Xi Jinping, the Chinese leader, expressed his dissatisfaction with the fact that the South Korean president Park Geun-hye had taken to siding with the interests of America over China.
Sun opined, “Xi had tried to sway South Korea’s alignment choice and when Park rejected China’s demand not to deploy THAAD, it made Xi’s great diplomacy on South Korea a failure and an embarrassment.”
It was early this year that the missile system was deployed and Geng Shuang, China’s Foreign Ministry spokesman gave his warning. He talked about Beijing’s resolute determination to defend the security interests.
South Korea and China have been great trading partners for quite a long period of time. China has leveraged on this economic clout to do as it pleases with the Korean businesses, including punishing them.
