Apple’s Upcoming iPhone 8 Might Not Feature A Fingerprint Sensor
Apple’s latest handset, the iPhone 8 is rapidly approaching its launch but potential buyers might be surprised to know that the device will not have a fingerprint sensor.
The revelation was made by Mehdi Hosseini, an analyst at Susquehanna Financial Group who stated that there is a high likelihood that the iPhone 8 will not have a fingerprint. There have been a lot of rumors about the device including that it will be using OLED displays. Apple is also expected to shift towards bezeless screens which is currently the trend and this has contributed to the elimination of the physical button. However, there were rumors that the company will feature under-screen fingerprint sensor technology but that might not be the case.
“Apple has decided to remove the fingerprint option from the OLED model and instead stick with facial recognition,” stated Hosseini.
Jun Zhang, an analyst at Rosenblatt Securities stated in a report released on Monday that Apple has been trying to make a fingerprint sensor that is built into the display but has not made much progress. He noted that Apple will most likely put it aside and wait until the under-screen fingerprint sensor technology has matured enough for the company to adopt it.
Zhang also pointed out that iPhone 8 users will initially rely on facial recognition to unlock their devices. The analyst also expects the software and tech giant to produce 5 million units of the handset in the third quarter and the number will rise significantly to 45 million units in the fourth quarter.
Apple is expected to unveil the handset in September and there has been a lot of anticipation especially because it will be the 10th anniversary iPhone. Apple is thus facing a lot of pressure to deliver and also due to the competitive nature of the industry. Rivals such as Samsung have set really high standards and Apple is expected to deliver nothing less. The fingerprint scanner has been one of the most iconic features of the iPhone and it has been there for quite a few years. Its absence might be a huge blow to the sales of the next generation iPhone.
